FreeRent.org Partners With The City of Atlanta and Public-Private Partners to House a Family in Crisis

FreeRent.org steps in when families are in crisis, and thanks to partnerships we’ve been building, we can seamlessly build a personalized plan for every family we work with.

FreeRent.org Partners With The City of Atlanta and Public-Private Partners to House a Family in Crisis

In February, a devastating storm left one Atlanta family homeless after a tree crashed through their roof, tragically claiming the life of their father and husband.

Mayor Andre Dickens’ office and The City of Atlanta stepped in, committed to finding them a path forward.

Since that day, the City of Atlanta’s Housing Help Center worked hard to find a long-term solution. The mother and daughter have shown incredible resilience, navigating life from one hotel room to another while rebuilding their foundation.

As their temporary hotel stay neared its end, the Housing Help Center reached out to FreeRent.Org  to help secure safe, stable housing—and fast.

FreeRent.org steps in when families are in crisis, and thanks to partnerships we’ve been building, we can seamlessly build a personalized plan for every family we work with.

Within five days, a public-private partnership mobilized:

  • The FreeRent.Org team handled housing placement and urgent wrap-around support coordination.

  • Our partners at Roots, a workforce housing real estate community, had a perfect, newly renovated two-bedroom apartment so the family could rebuild their home in one of the key corridors of the City

  • Atlanta Habitat for Humanity Restore joined forces alongside interior designer Amy Odeneal of Amy Rebekah Interiors to fully furnish the home.

  • With a deep belief in long-term financial stability, the family will receive rental assistance, financial education, and wraparound support programs from FreeRent.Org

  • By living in a Roots property, the family will have the opportunity to also build wealth while they rent, strengthen their credit, and establish a path toward long-term financial success.

This is what a public-private partnership can look like in action: agencies, non-profits, businesses, and community members working together to meet the short and long-term needs of our neighbors.

The Mayor’s office often says that Atlanta is a group project, which is absolutely right. It takes all of us. And when we show up together, powerful things happen.

Thank you to every hand and heart that made this possible:

This is what hope in action looks like. And we’re just getting started.

FreeRent’s programs began in Atlanta in 2021 as part of the founding of Roots, an affordable workforce housing REIT. Its purpose was to provide rental assistance to residents in need across Roots properties, helping families stay in their homes. In 2023, the program expanded with the launch of the FreeRent ATL grant to assist families across Atlanta. In 2024, thanks to this growth, FreeRent became an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit to advance its vision of building long-term financial stability for renting families
